What are Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)?


EAPs are professional assessment, referral, and/or short-term counseling services offered to employees with alcohol, drug, or mental health problems. EAPs also offer, for example: eldercare, childcare, critical incident debriefing, and wellness programs.

Designed for maximum flexibility for working professionals, Northeastern’s EAP courses are offered in a six week format entirely online.


The next cycle of courses begins in Fall 2008.  Here is the Fall 08 schedule:

HSV 5160 Introduction to Employee Assistance Programs
Dates:  September 15 - October 24
6 wk, online course

HSV 5162 EAP Services
Dates:  October 27 - December 12
6 wk, online course


Flexible Options 

 

1.  An EAP non-credit Certificate Program that includes the following three core courses, plus one elective.

Core Courses*:
HSV 5160    Introduction to Employee Assistance Programs
HSV 5162    EAP Services
HSV 5165    Addictions in the Workplace
    or ED 5163 Clinical Components of EAP Services


Elective Options*:
(choose one)
HSV 5161    Quantitative and Qualitative Evaluation of EAPs
HSV 5164    International EAPs
HSV 5166    EAP Accreditation / Quality Management

*Each course is offered for 24 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) and 24 Social Work Continuing Education Units (CEUs).  Course descriptions are listed below.


2. Individual courses that can be taken for 24 PDHs and 24 Social Work CEUs. Students may select to take individual courses to meet their marketplace or professional development needs.  Courses may be applied to a certificate at a later date.


3. An EAP specialization as a part of a Master’s Degree in Human Resources, Human Services, or Leadership (for information, visit http://www.spcs.neu.edu/grad/degrees/).

4. An EAP Graduate Certificate for graduate credit (for information, visit http://www.spcs.neu.edu/employee_assist/).

Faculty: Leaders in the Industry


Director- Dr. Dale A. Masi, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Maryland
Dr. Masi has been a tenured full professor for 25 years, teaching the Master’s in Social Work at the University of Maryland. She also directed the EAP Residential School with the Maryland’s School of Business for ten years. Dr. Masi has authored 13 books on EAPs and workplace issues. She is a Fulbright scholar.
